Teamwork Pays Off in Bistineau Salvinia Wars
May 01, 2012 -- Sometimes it pays to get involved. Five years ago the giant salvinia infestation of Lake Bistineau had all but covered the waterway in a near-solid carpet of green. The state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries found itself struggling to get control of the floating fern, which is not native to the United States.
Unfortunately, Bistineau wasn't the only waterway facing this creeping menace. That meant resources were stretched thin. But headway has been made. Today, the LDWF sprays the 17,000-acre lake every week, Monday through Thursday. That, in combination with reduced lake levels and the introduction of aquatic beetles, has helped to reduce the Bistineau infestation from 8,000 acres in 2007 to fewer than 50 today. Read the full story to get the details.
"While no one is ready to declare victory in this man-vs.-nature fight, they are making headway and local waterways suffering like Bistineau are benefitting from the lessons learned through a greater spirit of cooperation."
